Los Angeles District (LAD) of the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics presents "Dialectics in Dietetics: Multiple Truths in Nutrition Science", a special one day conference.

Dr Avena will present: "The Science Behind Sugar Addiction". Her lab studies the intersects between nutrition and addiction, and the underlying brain mechanisms that can help us to better understand maladaptive eating behaviors.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Analyze the empirical research on food as an addictive substance.
  • Interpret findings regarding brain mechanisms that regulate drug addictions and how they are associated with overeating behaviors.
  • Understand how the modern food environment impacts our psychology in a way that can promote overeating.
